I attended John Massimino's critique class yesterday. As I said before in an earlier post, John has a good eye for composition and supportive way of letting you know what problems exist in your paintings. There are twenty artists in the group and more would attend if the group size wasn't capped.
I've noticed that John always finds something positive to say about your painting before he suggests areas for improvement. He jokingly says that when he writes his book on painting it will be call: "but" as in that's a great painting "but"...
The artists in the group work in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel and mixed media. I find that regardless of the medium the suggestions made for others are also helpful for me as a watercolor painter as they frequently address issues of composition, color, pattern and marks.

My interest in art started as a child but laid dormant while I worked in a career resolving family conflict as a mediator.
It's a long story with academic roots in mathematics and psychology, an enjoyable chapter teaching middle school students and a conclusion with work in State government.
As you can see, the path to painting has been circuitous.
We are bombarded with images in our daily lives from the minute we awake each morning until we close our eyes at night. We see them in magazines, on computer and television screens, on billboards, and in ubiquitous advertising.
For some of us the images continue while we sleep. While our other senses are also processing information it can be argued that modern life is disproportionately influenced by the objects in our visual world.
I've concluded that Art is important because it helps us understand our environment and provides a means for viewing the world, and communicating this vision to others.
